Peace lilies are one of the most popular indoor plants, as they are quite easy to take care of.
The plant is quite tolerable, so it will thrive in both direct sunlight, as well as in indirect light or low light.
Also, they have stunning, white flowers, which makes them stunning décor pieces.
However, sometimes indoor gardeners struggle with keeping the plant blooming, and experience problems such as brown leaves or small flowers.
Typically, these problems are the result of either over-watering or bad choice of fertilizer.
Luckily, I’m here to recommend a few products that will help you get rid of yellowing leaves and boost the development of green leaves.
Fertilizer for peace lily
As stated, the peace lily is one of the less demanding plants, as it can stand a bit of neglect and different lighting conditions.
It is truly a beautiful plant, one of the most favorable among indoor gardeners, and with proper care, it will thrive.
When it comes to fertilizers, you will stumble upon different opinions.
I have done my homework, tested different ones on my peace lily, and created the ultimate list of fertilizers for this tropical plant.
Before we begin, I would like to share a few tips that could help you with choosing the right one.
Peace lilies need well-balanced fertilizer. The NPK ratio should be 20-20-20, but also the ones labeled as 24-8-16 or 12-4-8 will work fine too.
Secondly, fertilizer won’t help much if soil conditions are poor. It is recommended to always use well-draining soil and pots with drainage holes so there is no build-up. The soil should retain water a bit, only to give enough time for minerals and nutrients to reach the roots.
Coffee grounds can be added to the soil, as they have all nutrients the peace lily needs such as nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus.
When it comes to feeding, you will read different recommendations, and from my experience, the number of feedings will mostly depend on the light conditions.
For example, if your plants are growing in shaded areas, they won’t absorb the nutrients too fast, so feeding can be done only a few times throughout the growing season. On the other hand, if your peace lilies receive bright light, you can feed them every four to six weeks.
Remember to fertilize the peace lily only through spring and summer.
Now, let’s get back to the list of fertilizers.

1. Winchester Gardens
I want to start the list with the Winchester Gardens 12 Count Highland Rim Aquatic Fertilizer Bag, as it is slightly different from the other ones.
Winchester Gardens offers a variety of fertilizers for different plants – you can easily find the ones made specifically for roses, fruit trees, all-purpose ones, and for promoting blooming.
This one is used for aquatic plants, such as lotuses, and it can be even used for peace lily plants as this type of lilies truly thrives in water.
The plant can be kept in water to promote the development of the root while keeping the peace lily flowers above water level. As the roots grow bigger, the plant can be re-potted.
While keeping the plant in room temperature water, you should still provide essential nutrients and that is when Winchester Garden fertilizer steps in.
- Manufacturer: Winchester Gardens
- Item weight: 3.84 ounces
- Package dimensions: 4.25 x 1 x 6.5 inches
This fertilizer for peace lilies is suitable for new, young plants.
While in the early stages, the plant requires a little extra boost to develop those green flowers, and this plant food will provide the essential nutrients.
The formulation is 10-26-10 – phosphorus is present in the highest amount, and this nutrient plays the main role in the growth and blossoming of peace lilies.
Furthermore, the higher amount of phosphorus will prevent root rot – a common problem when growing peace lilies in tap water.
The other two elements, nitrogen, and potassium are present in high amounts as well, to promote the green leaves and good cellular function of the plant.
Moreover, the tablets do not contain any copper. As you may know, this element can be quite damaging for the plant. It is frequently added to the fertilizers, as it lowers the price of the products, however, when the potting soil gets saturated with copper, the roots become damaged.
The toxicity will further negatively influence the growth of the plant, thus it is recommended to avoid fertilizers with this element. In case any aquatic life is present in the pot, the copper will negatively affect it too.
Once you place the plant in the pot, add one tablet of the fertilizer.
This is slow-release plant food, so in most cases, one tablet will last for up to two months.
If after one month you don’t spot any new blooms, you can add another tablet.
- Copper-free, non-toxic
- Suitable for peace lilies growing in water
- Optimal NPK for peace lily leaves, 10-26-10
- Pricier compared to other fertilizers on this list
2. Miracle-Gro Indoor Fertilizer
The first liquid fertilizer on the list is Miracle-Gro Indoor Plant Food, 8-Ounce (Plant Fertilizer).
When it comes to the type of fertilizer, anything works for peace lilies, as long as it has a good NPK composition.
Liquid fertilizer is always a good option, as it allows you to dose the feedings, but keep in mind that you should always use it diluted.
Miracle-Gro’s products are some of the most reviewed and top-rated gardening fertilizers, potting mixes, and growing systems, so of course, this fertilizer had to be included.
It is an all-purpose one, for indoor plants, so it will work well as a fertilizer for peace lilies.
Let’s take a look at some specs and key features.
- Manufacturer: Miracle-Gro
- Item weight: 1.32 pounds
- Package dimensions: 7.68 x 5.75 x 1.85 inches
The fertilizer for peace lilies comes in the bottle of eight ounces.
Once it is diluted, you can use it to fertilize the plants through the entire growing period. Remember, the amount will depend on the conditions, so if your peace lilies are exposed to indirect light, you won’t have to use more than one pump in each feeding.
Let’s take a look at composition.
Miracle-Gro has quite simple yet effective gardening products, and this fertilizer is not different.
The formulation is optimal for plants grown indoors, as they need nutrients that will boost the growth rate.
When it comes to NPK, it is 10-10-10 – the ratio suitable for an indoor peace lilly.
It would be better if the amount of phosphorus was higher compared to the other two elements since white flowers need that for better development, but even with this composition, you can expect many of those white flags.
Since these are the main nutrients present in the fertilizer, I would suggest using a potting mix that is rich in other minerals.
The food is added straight from the bottle to either a watering can or dry soil. Its form is similar to water, so diluting it is not a problem.
If you are adding it to the pot, I would suggest heavily watering the plant afterward, so that minerals are well distributed throughout the soil.
- All-purpose fertilizer, with 1-1-1 NPK
- Suitable for peace lilies grown indoors
- Boosts the development of flowers
- There could be some leakage from the bottle
3. Miracle-Gro Blooming Food
Miracle-Gro products do wonders for flowering plants (grown outdoors and indoors) that I had to add another one of their fertilizers: Miracle-Gro Blooming Houseplant Food, 8 oz., Plant Food Feeds All Flowering Houseplants Instantly.
This is another liquid fertilizer, as the peace lily plant thrives with that type.
As you can see, this is a great fertilizer for any houseplant, but I would like to focus on specific benefits for peace lilly and its flower since this product promotes the development of small pebbles.
- Manufacturer: SMG
- Item weight: 8 ounces
- Package dimensions: 4 x 5 x 18 inches
So, how to determine whether this fertilizer is more suitable for your plant?
Well, in case your plant lilies are not blossoming, I would suggest going for this one since its main function is to boost the development of blooms.
To do its job properly, the amount of phosphorus was slightly raised compared to nitrogen and potassium.
The NPK is 0.5-1-0.5, so with that additional amount of one nutrient, the plant will slowly start to bloom.
With these nutrients, and proper watering and light, the peace lily will thrive.
Since the fertilizer is in liquid form, I would suggest diluting it.
Even when diluted, it should be added to the pot, and if there is any trace of product on the flowers, gently remove it with a clean cloth.
Thanks to the pump on the bottle, the fertilizer can be added directly into the soil too.
Immediately after adding the food, water the plant generously.
On the packaging, you will find some recommended amount of the product depending on the size of the pot.
However, I didn’t strictly follow these instructions.
If you already have a healthy plant, but just want to give it the nutrients to maintain those green leaves, then one pump every few weeks is more than enough.
You will have to fertilize the peace lily with yellow leaves more frequently, as the nutrients can promote the bloom.
- Great for flowering houseplants
- An additional amount of P
- Easy to use
- Too expensive for big gardens
4. Shake ‘N Feed
Miracle-Gro Shake ‘N Feed All Purpose Plant Food is another fertilizer by Miracle-Gro.
As said, this is one of the largest gardening companies, so it is difficult to choose or recommend just one of their products.
The previously mentioned fertilizer was a liquid one, so I had to include the one for gardeners that are not fans of that type.
Also, if you have a larger indoor garden, this fertilizer could be a better choice since the container is bigger and food can cover up to 180 square feet.
Now, let’s cover some basics before moving on to key features.
- Manufacturer: Miracle-Gro
- Item weight: 4.93 pounds
- Package dimensions: 4.13 x 9.8 x 7.5 inches
For growing peace lilies, the amount of minerals present in the fertilizer is of utmost importance as the peace lily leaves require that extra boost when grown in indoor conditions. This fertilizer contains bone and feather meal, earthworm casting, and kelp, so you know the origin of each mineral.
The nutrient that promotes the green color of the leaf is nitrogen, thus if your plant lilies are not as vibrant, you should look for a fertilizer with a slightly higher level of this element.
This Miracle-Gro one would be a great choice as NPK is 12-4-8.
Another benefit of this product is the presence of microbes.
Microbes are beneficial as they can prevent some of the common problems such as root rot, but also improve water retention in the potting mix as well as aeration, thus allowing better absorption of the minerals.
With regular usage, you can expect to grow a peace lilly with stunning blooms.
The one thing you will have to pay attention to is dosage – the recommended amount is half of a cup for 10 square feet.
So, you’ve potted your peace lily in a smaller pot, you shouldn’t overfertilize it.
Also, make sure that you are adding the fertilizer only to the soil. Otherwise, the leaves might turn brown.
I used the fertilizer straight from the container, by adding it directly into the soil. Then I would gently mix it, and water the plant to help the nutrients dissolve.
The granules are dissolving slowly, so roots are absorbing nutrients at a slower rate, which means that fertilizing doesn’t have to be done often.
If after two or three weeks you don’t spot any significant results, you can repeat the feeding.
- Optimum NPK for vivid, green leaf
- Easy to use
- Continuous, slow-release
- Leaves can turn yellow when in direct contact with the fertilizer
5. Highland Rim Aquatic
In case you want to grow your peace lily plant in water, but the previously mentioned aquatic fertilizer is not doing the trick, then I would suggest switching to Winchester Gardens 80 Count Highland Rim Aquatic Fertilizer Bag.
When it comes to aquatic plants and fertilizers suitable for plants grown in water, Winchester Gardens is the best choice.
Their food won’t only suit the peace lilies, but other plants such as lotuses as well.
Also, it is not harmful to aquatic life, so you can use the tablets even if the small animals are present in the pot.
Now let’s get back to features and benefits for a peace lily.
- Manufacturer: Winchester Gardens
- Item weight: 1.74 pounds
- Package dimensions: 7.5 x 2.5 x 9.25 inches
In general, new, young plants require some extra push to develop properly.
Since you are taking the plant from its natural habitat, the plant is developing slightly slower in the new conditions, as there is a small period of adjustment.
For some, like the peace lily, growing in water is quite beneficial in those early stages, but the plant will still require some additional minerals to bloom.
This fertilizer has just the right amount of nutrients – it is another one with a higher level of phosphorus, so you can expect a lot of new flowers on your plant.
Nitrogen is present only in 10%, as well as potassium.
The application of the fertilizer is easy.
It comes in a big bag, and forms of tabs.
The minerals are released slowly, as the tab is dissolved in the water, so there is no need for frequent feeding.
Once you pot the plant, add one tab into the water.
After a month, you can feed the plant again.
As said, Winchester Garden’s products are safe for aquatic life. The copper can be quite damaging to plant, so their tabs do not contain any.
Furthermore, the tabs will boost the plant’s immunity to prevent some common diseases.
Thus, the plant has optimal conditions for growing healthy roots and white flowers without any potting mix.
- Easy to use
- Non-toxic, copper-free
- It may be hard to dose
6. Osmocote Smart-Release
In case you prefer slow-release fertilizers over liquid ones, I would suggest Osmocote 274150 Smart-Release Plant Food Plus Outdoor & Indoor.
Osmocote is one of the leading companies in smart fertilizers and smart gardening products in general.
All of their products are suitable for both indoor and outdoor gardens, thus saving you money spent on food for plants.
The food from the fertilizer is released slowly over time, following the natural development of the plant, and providing nutrients needed for each stage of blossoming.
This is particularly suitable for peace lilies, as they do not require a large number of minerals in general, but at early stages and during growing period need the boost.
- Manufacturer: Scotts Miracle-Gro
- Item weight: 1.1 pounds
- Package dimensions: 2.57 x 3.2 x 5.66 inches
The NPK of this fertilizer is 15-9-12.
As you can see from the amount of each mineral, the goal of this Osmocote product is to promote greenness, so you can expect your peace lilly to develop stunning, vibrant leaves.
Also, the slightly higher percentage of potassium will enable a proper cellular function, thus improving the overall health of the plant.
Besides N, P, and K, this peace lily fertilizer contains another eight essential nutrients: sulfur is present in the highest percentage out of all them, and boron and iron are present in the slightly higher amount.
The one thing you should pay attention to is the copper in the fertilizer – this element can be quite beneficial for the plant, however, it can negatively affect the environment around the plant.
Even though it is present in a small amount, you should still pay attention during feedings, so that all granules end up in the new soil.
Now let’s talk about application.
The fertilizer is stored in a plastic shell – it is fully permeable to water, so after watering, the nutrients will start to dissolve inside the shell.
If the soil is evenly saturated, the minerals will leave the shell and start reaching the roots.
This release is super slow, so one packaging can last up to six months since you have to feed the plant every six weeks.
- Easy to use
- Eleven nutrients that help peace lily to bloom
- Suitable even for outdoor peace lilies
- Shells are plastic
7. Miracle-Gro Water Soluble
This list is ending with another Miracle-Gro product, however this time it is a slow-release, smart Miracle-Gro Water Soluble Azalea, Camellia, Rhododendron Plant Food.
As already stated, Miracle-Gro products are one of the most reviewed ones, and it is hard to pick out just one of their products since they are almost all neck and neck.
The peace lily prefers slightly acidic soil. The pH of the ground should be between 5 and 6.5, similar to Azalea or Camellia, thus this fertilizer is a great choice.
It is designed for plants that prefer slightly acidic conditions, and without a doubt, your peace lily will thrive with this food.
- Manufacturer: Miracle-Gro
- Item weight: 5 pounds
- Package dimensions: 5 x 5 x 10 inches
By choosing the correct soil, you can easily control the acidity, however, some plants (as peace lilies) require more control of the pH level of soil, which can be easily achieved with fertilizer.
Thus, your peace lily will grow in optimal conditions – proper pH of the soil, as well as the required level of nutrients.
When it comes to the composition of the fertilizer, it is 30-30-10.
These significantly higher percentages of two nutrients are a must to reach that prefer soil acidity for a peace lily.
Also, the larger amounts will ensure richer foliage and more flowers, compared to other types will lower levels of minerals.
When it comes to the right application of the product, it can even be used directly, without damaging the peace lily.
It is still recommended to avoid the application of the fertilizer directly to the leaves, so if you spot a bit on any leaf, remove it with a clean cloth.
For diluting, one tablespoon of fertilizer is more than enough for a gallon of water. In most cases, for feeding peace lilies, you can use even less than one-half of the tablespoon.
Also, the recommended feeding on the packaging is every two weeks.
In my experience, this could be too much for an indoor peace lily. The pH could go below 5 thus damaging the plant.
Even if you are using it diluted, I would suggest sticking to monthly fertilizing and increasing the amount only if you don’t see any progress on your peace lily.
- Easy to use
- Boost acidity of the soil which suits peace lilies
- Promotes richer foliage and flower development
- Too frequent fertilizing can cause burns of the peace lily
What to look for in fertilizer for peace lily?
If you are still struggling to pick the right fertilizer after those few recommendations, I have a few more tips I would like to share with you.
Before creating a list, I researched to find out what should fertilizer for peace lily contain and the criteria it should meet.
All of the mentioned products do meet these criteria, but in case you want to do find a few more products to test out, here are a few guidelines:
1. Balanced fertilizer
Generally, peace lilies are not demanding.
If you already own one you are familiar with how easy going this plant is.
Even gardeners that consider themselves amateurs, grow this plant without any difficulties.
However, a bad choice of fertilizer can harm it, as some ingredients or amounts of certain elements can cause burns.
I would always go for well-balanced plant food, meaning that the percentage of all nutrients is the same.
20-20-20 formulation is a great choice, and you can even choose something not as strong, such as 10-10-10.
2. Organic fertilizer
Organic fertilizers are always a good choice, as they reduce pollution significantly.
They work for peace lilies too, so if you prefer sustainability, then you shouldn’t have a problem with finding the one for your indoor garden.
The one thing I don’t like is that you never know the full composition of this type of plant food.
Generally, they are either vinegar, milk, or home compost.
Since you are never sure about the exact amount of nutrients present, I would suggest using less of it.
The mistake of overfertilizing can be easily made, so just follow the “less is more” rule with this type.
3. Solubility in water
If you already picked a liquid fertilizer, then make sure it is water-soluble.
If this trait is not mentioned on the packaging, click the “Remove from cart” button, and search for the one that is.
Direct application of a liquid fertilizer could potentially damage the plant, as fertilizer can get in touch with leaves or stems.
Also, it is not easy to evenly mix it with the soil.
If you choose a water-soluble plant food, you can mix it with water prior to feeding and thus make sure that the soil is evenly saturated.
How do I make my peace lily thrive?
In general, peace lilies are one of the less demanding houseplants, and getting them to bloom and thrive is quite easy so they are popular plants among beginners. You will recognize a peace lily by a stunning white flower and large leaves. When it comes to peace lily care, you have to pay attention to few things. Firstly, let’s talk about light. The amount of light will determine many other parameters. Typically, it is recommended to keep the plant in low light. The peace lily’s leaf is quite sensitive to direct sunlight, thus indirect light is a better choice. Furthermore, the watering will depend on light. Plants exposed to sunlight should get more water. Always make sure that the soil is evenly moist, and control the humidity levels. As mentioned, peace lilies are tolerant plants so they can adjust to the different humidity levels, but they thrive in high humidity. When it comes to soil, it should allow good drainage, as well as aeration, and pH should be slightly acidic.
Are coffee grounds good for peace lilies?
Yes, coffee grounds are quite beneficial. Firstly, it will make the growing mix more acidic, thus providing better conditions for the overall development of peace lilies. Moreover, coffee grounds contain a lot of nitrogen, which is important for young plants. Organic matter is also present in the coffee grounds and it could promote water retention, so you can reduce the number of watering.
What nutrients does a peace lily need?
In proper light and with regular watering, the plant will thrive, yet the fertilizer should be a part of peace lily care. Any fertilizer from the list will do the trick. The level of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus are of the utmost importance since the peace lily requires those elements the most.
When should you fertilize lilies?
Always fertilize the peace lily in spring and summer. Even in those months make sure that you are using diluted fertilizer and feeding the peace lily only once a month.
I hope that this article answered some of your questions about peace lilies and helped you find the right fertilizer.
As you can see, the choices are numerous, so it shouldn’t be difficult to pick the one that will suit your peace lily.
