Do you consider yourself to be a plant lover? You would like to grow plants, but you don’t have your own garden, right?
Well do not worry, I will help you with that. In this text I am going to make a list of herbs that you can grow in water in your house, so you wouldn’t need to worry about not having a garden where you could plant all plants you ever wanted.
Apart from that, I will also explain what is it that you would need in order for you to grow these plants in water.
So, stick with me, and you will have your own floating little garden in your house in no time. Let’s begin!
What Do You Need To Grow Herbs In Water
Before you start growing your herbs in water, you should be aware of a couple of things. You would need to gather several things first.
The first thing you would need is, of course, water. You can’t expect to grow plants in the water without water, right?
You should avoid using the water that contains chlorine. The water that contains chemicals would not affect herbs in a very good way.
Water from the faucet should be fine if you let it stay overnight. You can also keep rainwater and use it.
But, the best possible option would be to use spring water, because that type of water has a certain amount of useful minerals, which could be very beneficial to your herbs.
Next thing you need is something where you can grow your plant. There are a couple of characteristics you should be aware of.
You can use jars or even bottles to grow your herbs. If you choose a bottle, it should preferably be a glass one.
One thing to note here is that roots generally like dark places, and they grow much better if they are not overly exposed to direct sunlight.
So, when you pick a jar or a bottle, it is a good idea to pick ones made of a darker glass, like amber, for example.
And if you want to go with those, here is a recommendation for amber bottles.
They are slightly darker from most amber jars, so the roots will love it.
However, if you decide to grow it in a transparent container, make sure to use something, like paper, for example, to wrap it around and cover the area where the root is.
If you want the jars, you can go with any jar. But I would usually order these as they come 20 in the pack.
And you can use the leftover jars around the kitchen. A plus is that they have little labels too.
Usually, people grow their herbs in two container types, narrow and wide.
Narrow containers, like bottles and jars, have the upper hand because they can control how the plant grows and keep it steady and uptight.
If you live in a warm climate, you can use wide containers.
With them, you can put some protection from above and prevent insects of laying their eggs in water. Also, you can make small holes in the protective material to let you insert cuttings.
3. Herb Cuttings
And the last thing you need in order to start growing your herb in water is, of course, the plant itself. It’s really simple, just use soft cuttings and put them in the water. They should grow some roots very fast.
You can get cuttings either from your garden if you have one or from the supermarket. Just remember to wash them before you use them.
Now, the way you should do this is that first, you need to remove leaves that are positioned on the lower levels of the cutting and shape the tip a bit, so the roots could start growing.
One thing to remember here is that leaves shouldn’t be in the water, because when they get in touch with the water, they often rot and make the water unusable, which could have a bad effect on the plant itself.
Some plants have roots that take a longer time to grow, so you will have to play a bit of a waiting game.
You should change the water once a week, but try to do it without affecting the cuttings.
Roots should start growing in approximately 2 to 6 weeks, and when that happens, you may not even have to change the water anymore, depending on the type of the plant.
What Herbs Can You Grow In Water
Now that we have gone over the procedure of growing the herbs in water, let us see what are the herbs that could be grown in that way.
There are a lot of possible herbs to list here, but I have chosen some of the most common and generally the most useful plants that you can grow in the water.
One of the most common water-growing herbs is, of course, peppermint. It is widely used for its medicinal properties, which makes it very useful for everyone.
Peppermint is known to contain really high amounts of menthol, which offers pretty cool sensation when applied on the skin or even a tongue.
During that process, it does not, however, affect our body temperature at all.
It is fairly easy to grow peppermint in water.
What you should do is just take a couple of fresh cuttings and put them in water, and they will grow over time. Just follow the previous instructions, and you won’t have a problem.
Ah, fresh mint, it can be used for a variety of recipes.
From making a tea or nice refreshing mojito to simply just putting mint in the water to add some flavor. It is grown as simply as the peppermint since they are closely related herbs.
Having a mint is a very good way to get off of some sugary drinks because it can be used as a substitute for drinks.
It is really enjoyable to make a mint ice tea or mojito to refresh yourself.
So if you enjoy those little things, it is a good idea to grow mint in your house.
If you are a pizza lover, like me, this list would not be complete if I didn’t include oregano.
Oregano can be used as a nice addition to a lot of types of food, to make the flavor much better and more enjoyable.
In order to grow oregano in your home, first, you need to find a fresh growth, so you could take off the cutting and use it to grow your own plant.
As said above, it is fairly easy to get most of the cuttings from the supermarkets nowadays.
When you notice that plant started growing some tips, what you should do is pinch them and use them.
That said, it is very easy to grow oregano at home.
Basil is a very simple herb to grow, and a lot of people tend to do it because it has a large number of possible applications in both food and in medical purposes.
It should be grown inside your kitchen where it is warm and sunny because it really likes the light very much.
What you should be careful about is to remove cuttings when you notice that they will start flowering, so your effort wouldn’t be in vain.
As said above, basil can be used in a variety of ways.
It can really give a nice, certain flavor to some food, and is widely used as an addition when it comes to Italian food, like pasta.
Apart from that, it is also very useful in the medicinal treatment of some simple hardships, such as stomach issues.
And on top of that, basil can be planted with other herbs. So, if you just want to plant it with several other herbs, check out our guide on what herbs can be planted together.
Sage is very simple to grow, and you probably won’t require a lot of it, since it is usually used in small quantities.
No matter if you are using it as an addition to food, to boost the flavor, or in medicinal purposes.
The way you grow, it is that first you need to get fresh cuttings in the spring, put them in water and wait until it grows some roots.
Sage should be kept in an area that contains a lot of light, which also has enough air since the herb prefers those types of conditions.
It can be used in small quantities to add some flavor to the food, or in medicinal purposes, like for example, for inhalation, when you have a full nose.
If you are looking for a sugar substitute, then look no further! You can grow one in your house.
Stevia is a sweet little plant that is very useful to give the sweet taste to your tea or any other drink.
What you should do is take a couple of cuttings from a growing plant and put it in the water.
As with other plants that I’ve previously mentioned, Stevia needs to grow in light and warm places. So make sure to pick the right location for it.
If properly grown, it can be very sweet, and you can forget about using sugar.
7. Lemon balm
The best time to get a fresh cutting of lemon balm is in the spring or fall. That’s when it would be at a peak and would have been the freshest.
Lemon balm likes warm places and requires a lot of light. But try not to expose it too directly.
It does not prefer being on direct light.
Since it takes some time for a lemon balm to grow roots, you will need to be patient. It is usually around 4-5 weeks.
You should change the water on a regular basis. In that way the herb can stay healthy for as long as possible, so make sure you time that right.
Lemon balm is a very useful herb, which you can use for tea or some other beverages.
It would be a nice addition to your home floating garden.
There are a couple of types of tarragon herb. For example, French and Russian versions.
The first one is usually used as an addition to the food and in making a lot of meals.
Russian tarragon is a bit blander so you can use it as an addition to salads.
The best time to get new cuttings is in the spring since that is the time when there will be new growths.
You could also do it in the fall, but those cuttings usually take more time to grow some roots.
It is probably better to go for the spring cuttings after all.
As usual, you should keep tarragon in a warm place where it can get much bright light, in order for it to grow as it should.
The best time to take new cuttings of thyme is just before the flowering season.
And that means from the middle of spring to the early summertime.
One thing to notice here is that it is very important to take the cutting from the green growths.
If you take it from older ones, which are brown and stiff, they may take a much longer time to grow some roots.
Also, it is very important to remember that thyme cuttings could dry very fast.
Therefore, it would be a good idea to bring along some water with you to put them after you cut them.
When the plant gets a bit bigger, you should cut the stems so the branches can grow freely.
Rosemary is one of the most common indoor plants. It is fairly easy to grow and take care of.
Trust me, you shouldn’t have any doubts about whether to grow it or not.
The best time to get new cuttings would be the spring since those cuttings will grow roots much faster and easier.
Make sure to put it in a warm and light spot, in order for it to grow to its full capacity.
Now that we have gone through the list of the best herbs you can grow in water let’s see what are the most common questions people have about this topic.
